Why HelmBill exists
Every freelancer knows the feeling. You finish a project, realize you forgot to track half your hours, scramble to reconstruct a timesheet from memory, and send an invoice two weeks late. Then you wait another month to get paid.
We built HelmBill because we lived that cycle. We were freelancers paying $12 a month for time trackers that still made us leave our work to log our work. Every time we opened the full app to create a project or start a timer, we lost focus. The tool meant to help us was slowing us down.
So we built something different. A timer that lives in your menubar. A widget where you can create clients, set rates, and start tracking without ever leaving what you're working on. An invoicing flow that turns your tracked hours into a polished invoice with one click.
HelmBill is the tool we wished existed. Now it does.
What's in a name
A helm isn't just a ship's wheel.
In Old English, a helm was a protective covering — a woven canopy of branches and leaves that sheltered what was valuable. Farmers built helms to protect their yield from weather and loss, ensuring that everything they cultivated was preserved until it could be collected.
